Storage Tips #2

PROHIBITED STORAGE GOODS

Common sense and state laws determine what may be stored. You alone control access to your storage space. No storage of live animals, perishables, liquids, explosives, flammable liquids, fuels, toxic materials or other items which require a controlled environment. Remember to drain fuel from gasoline engines before storing.

APPLIANCES

A refrigerator or freezer should be dried thoroughly and stored with the doors open. All appliances should be cleaned before storage. Utilize the space in or on appliances for the storage of smaller boxes.

METAL ITEMS

To prevent rust, metal items should be wiped with a rag to remove moisture.

BOOKS AND DOCUMENTS

Pack books flat to protect the binders. Do not put directly on floor, use skids or pallets to prevent moisture damage. Do not overfill boxes.

BEDDING, CLOTHING, & CURTAINS

Articles should be hung on hangers. If hanging is not possible or appropriate, such items should be folded carefully and stored in a dresser or cedar chest. Items should be stored clean to avoid attracting pests.

DISHES AND GLASSWARE

Items should be individually wrapped. Do not place heavy objects in same box. Glassware should be placed on top.

FURNITURE

Stand sofas and mattresses on end. Disassemble beds and tables. Stack chairs. Keep upholstery off the floor. Cover with a sheet or dust cover.
